Monocots is the shorthand for Monocotyledon, one of two groups of Flowering Plants or Angiosperms. The word means a single or one “seed leaf” associated with the first leaf produced on germination. Another trait associated with the Monocots is seen in a cross section of the stem as a vascular system of scattered bundles and the absence of any cambium. Leaves are often linear with parallel venation and the flower petals are in 3’s or multiples of 3 though it is often difficult to tell sepals from petals. Roots are frequently fibrous and finely branched.
