Taxonomic Levels

Kingdom - The primary category of taxonomic classification into which organisms are classified.

Division - A major taxonomic grouping below kingdom and above class. Also called phylum when describing members of the kingdom Animalia (animals)

Class - A taxonomic grouping below division or phylum and above order. A class may include several sub-classes.

Sub-Class - A subdivision of a class.

Order - A taxonomic grouping below a class and above a family.

Family - A group of related genera with similar features and distinctive characteristics.

Genus - A group of closely related species.

Species - a fundamental category of organisms whose individuals have the ability to naturally breed with one-another.

Variety - a subdivision of a species. Also called a sub-species.
